We often ignore the fact that our kids have mentally fragile brains and sometimes a “simple” harsh word can stay with them for years, in some cases forever. Even though some of them may seem harmless at the time, they can still affect their psychological development far into adult life.
Here is a list of 4 Mentally Damaging Things We Say to Kids Way Too Often:
1. “You’re Too Sensitive”
Because many kids are born with more finely tuned nervous system they often react intensely to just about everything. It`s a big mistake to try and wash that sensitivity out.
If this happens, over time, the child will stop or reduce its ability to empathize with others. As Child psychologist Elinor Bashe suggests, parents need to learn to accept their child’s emotions, even if they seem not logical at that time.
2. “That’s Life”
Maybe it`s OK to tell your 24-year old to suck it up by saying “Well, that’s life,” but it’s certainly not OK to say the same thing to your child. His little brain is still physically unable to understand the fact that his experiences are not unique. Instead, you should encourage resiliency after validating his experience.
