Abusing Your Spouse In Russia Is No Longer A Criminal Offense

It all started last August when an ultra-conservative Russian lawmaker introduced a bill which made its way to Vladimir Putin through Russia`s court system. This month, the Russian President signed it into a law. This is a shameful law that decriminalizes domestic violence. Before this new law, such abuse was recognized as a crime and was punishable up to two years in jail.

“Beatings of spouses or children that result in bruising or bleeding but not broken bones are punishable by 15 days in prison or a fine, if they do not happen more than once a year.” – Per the Guardian.

State officials who approve the bill say it`s designed to limit the state`s interference into family matters.
