For instance, in Germany, people thought they are indicators to how long you are supposed to live.
The actual medical name is leukonychia. These spots are usually benign and sometimes they are nothing more than a bruise on your nail bed. They can appear if you pinch or hit your finger and stick around for a long period of time because they grow out with the nail.
Some think that they appear as a result of nutritional deficiency, but so far there is little evidence to support this claim.
Also, genetically some people are predisposed to get them more than others.
They may not look like a big deal, but sometimes they can indicate a serious health issue. The main problem is that it’s very hard to spot the difference between the benign ones and the serious ones.
