This awesome Japanese invention is called kotatsu and its origin can be trace back to the early 14th century Japanese irori. Thanks to the cooking heart the Japanese stayed warmed in those long winter months.
The kotatsu is made of a blanked that is positioned in the middle of low table frame and table-top. Its main source of heat is placed under the blank so in the early days when wearing traditional Japanese clothing the warm air circulated between the bottom of the robe and the neck keeping the whole body warm.
Today`s version or the Modern Kotatsu are movable and since many Japanese houses have insulation they serve as an effective place where you can stay warm during the cooler months. Plus, it really looks like fun. 🙂
