The Amsterdam Rainbow Dress was designed by Mattijs van Bergen, a fashion designer and spatial designer Oeri van Woezik via collaboration with COC Amsterdam. The idea was to make both a political and fashion statement about the rights of the LGBT community on global level.
On its unveiling the dress was worn by transgender model Valentijn de Hingh. The bodice was made with the image of the Amsterdam flag since Netherland`s capital is known as safe haven for queer people. The other parts of the dress were made from the flags of 72 countries around the globe where being gay is illegal.
On the grand unveiling Peter de Ruijter, the Chairman of COC Amsterdam spoke about the need of support from other countries because Amsterdam`s role as a safe haven is not given by default. People need to follow the example of its citizens and we all need to unite, involve and connect especially now with the current refugee crises from Africa and the Middle East.
