Alma Torres, age 24, from the Bronx, New York, decided to turn a very negative situation into a positive one, supporting other women who are struggling and going through similar unpleasant experiences.
8 years ago Torres was diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and because of it, she gained weight and started to grow coarse facial hair.
“I have been called ‘ugly’, others have said I should ‘kill myself,’” she said. “People have told me ‘go wax your ugly a**’ and have called me ‘cancer’.”
After years of shaving and trying to hide her condition she has finally decided to accept her beard.
Most of the time people avoid making comments to her face, they mostly do it on the internet by trying to take her picture first and then put it online so they can have a good laugh with their friends. ”I know it’s not a big deal so I’m okay with it” – says Torres.
With the support and help from her boyfriend, she has learned to deal with it. It turned out that he was very understanding of her condition and he`s not bothered by her facial hair at all.
“I wouldn’t know what to say about PCOS, but I know my girlfriend has it and it’s a struggle everyday but she pushes through,” he said.
