Since going viral last week, this video has been viewed minions of times. It shows the live interview of Robert Kelly, an associate professor of Political Science being interrupted by his two children. Then we see a woman rushing in behind them, keeping out of the shot of the camera while taking the kids out of the room.
Here`s the problem: Several media outlets reported that the woman was the Professor`s maid or the children`s nanny, when in fact she was his wife! Some of them even “hoped she kept her job”.
Understandably, this assumption sparkled a backlash and people started to criticize media outlets for demonstrating bias and racial stereotypes.
‘People fell back on stereotypes. There are stereotypes of Asian women as servile, as passive, as fulfilling some kind of service role. People were quick to make that assumption.’ said Phil Yu, a blogger at Angry Asian Man.
After these tweets from Prof Kelly with his wife, many still believed she was the nanny.
